Sparkling cleaned residential granite flooring

Granite is one of the toughest materials used for flooring. Formed from cooled volcanic magma, it consists of quartz, feldspar, and other minerals that give it high resistance to heat, scratches, and acid etching. Unlike marble, granite does not easily etch when exposed to vinegar or lemon juice.

However, this does not mean granite is completely maintenance-free. Because of high-traffic use and dirty mop residue, granite floors can accumulate a sticky film that makes them look dull and dark. Here is the best way to clean and maintain your granite floors.

1. Daily Sweep & Microfiber Mop

The dense surface of granite means dirt stays on the top layer.

  • Sweep or vacuum daily to remove dry sand particles. Sand particles under shoes can create microscratches over time.
  • Mop with warm water and a microfiber pad. Microfiber attracts grease better than traditional cotton string mops.

2. Use pH-Neutral Cleaners

Even though granite is acid-resistant, you should still avoid harsh acidic toilet cleaners. Acidic cleaners can break down the stone sealants applied to block stain absorption. Always use a pH-neutral stone detergent to clean granite safely.

3. Maintain Grout Joints

Granite tiles are usually installed with narrow grout joints. These joints are highly porous and quickly accumulate dirt, turning black.

Use a soft grout brush and a neutral cleaner to scrub the joints gently every few months. Never use wire brushes, which can scratch the polished edges of the granite tiles.

4. Buffing and Re-sealing

Granite requires a solvent-based, deep-penetrating sealer to keep oils from sinking into the stone. We recommend sealing your kitchen granite countertops and floors every 2 years.

If your granite floors have lost their high-gloss shine, standard mopping won't help. You will need a professional high-speed buffing machine equipped with diamond buffing pads and granite polishing powders to restore the glass-like shine.
